Main cause of obesity in America and the
solutions
Obesity is a term used to describe somebody who is very
overweight with a high degree of body fat. The obesity epidemic has been a
widely shown issue for years. Many American people of any age getting
overweight or obese from many reasons. Here are the main reasons for obesity
epidemic poor nutrition, lack of exercise; however, there are also many
solutions that can be adjusted on an individual basis, through lifestyle
changes.
First, let’s focus on what cause obesity?
Poor nutrition is a huge precursor to obesity. If our body is
not getting the proper nutrients, it will begin to slow down, making it even
harder to lose weight. Poor nutrition has become an increasing problem caused
by the convenience of fast food restaurants.
Many Americans having fast food because they think they do
not have much time for a good meal. But they do not realize that the foods from
fast food restaurant are very high calories and low nutrition. On the other
side, many people do not like to consume vegetables or fruits, which are very
high nutrition.
Lack of exercise is another important reason related to the
obesity. Many people have jobs that involve sitting at a desk most of the day.
They also rely on their cars rather than walking or cycling. When their relaxing
time, they tend to watch TV, surf on the internet or play computer games, and
hardly ever take regular exercise. If you are not active enough, you do not use
the energy provided by the food you eat and the extra calories are stored as
fat instead.
As we already know about what cause obesity next I would like
to focus on the solution for obesity.
1. Individual Solutions
The U.S. Surgeon General recommends a nutritious diet that
follows the "Dietary Guidelines for Americans" to prevent overweight
and obesity. The Surgeon General also supports that adults should get 30
minutes of exercise and children should get a full hour. The easiest ways to get
more physical exercise include taking the stairs instead of the elevator, for a
short way should riding bicycle instead of car. Encourage children to play
outside instead of watching TV or surfing internet. People should have more
nutritious food instead of having junk food from fast food restaurant that has
high calorie.
2. Community Solutions
Communities should also focus to help prevent obesity. For
example, the CDC recommends that communities make fresh fruit and vegetable
stands available at workplaces instead of vending machines that carrying
high-fat, empty-calories snacks. Nutritionist Isobel R. Contento reports on the
success of programs that connect schools with local farms, which supply fresh
produce for the school menu or stock cafeteria salad bars. One study, notes
Contento, when the price of carrots was 50 percent lower in school cafeteria,
there was a 200 percent increasing of the sale. In another study, raise the
price of higher-fat cafeteria options increased sales of more nutritious items.
The CDC also suggests communities improve outdoor recreational areas for people
to go relax and do exercise.
According to all the information above, American people
became obesity because two main reasons first, they have poor nutrition food
and some people do not like to have vegetables and fruit which contain very
high nutrition and they do not do enough exercise due to their work or they
don’t have much time. But there are some solutions that can help prevent
obesity in American people. Individual solution by having a good and fresh food
and encourage themselves and their lover to do more exercise. Community
solution by having a fruit stand instead of vending machine , connect school
with a local farm so student can get fresh food.
